Bloomington, IN | Square Footage: 900 | Timber Great Room | Hybrid Douglas Fir and Steel Trusses

This Southern Indiana home is a study in relaxation. It features an indoor pool, an exercise room, a yoga room and an outdoor kitchen. We were asked to work with the project architect and builder to design a truly unique timber and steel structure for the great room. The center clerestory of the great room is defined by four steel plated timber trusses which rest within two massive steel I-beam trusses that span the length of this thirty foot long great room while timber rafters support the lower, flanking shed roofs. The effect is very contemporary, almost industrial; yet the room is both spacious and warm with a massive fireplace at one end and a series of double doors on each side. One side opening onto the lounge terrace and the other side onto the koy terrace giving the sense of openness. We can honestly say that this is the first time we have incorporated steel so completely into a timber frame design.
